Creator of the  first ever ‘Hydration Care Assessment Tool’ called ‘ROC’ (Reliance On a Carer). ROC is designed to help ‘all concerned’ understand the level & type of support an elderly or vulnerable person needs to drink & eat.

My interest in hydration care stemmed from caring for my Mother and in 2009 I started to read multiple research papers, policies and guidance about dehydration in elderly care. As a front-line nurse, it soon became apparent to me that the only thing that academics could all agree on was that the elderly will always be at greater risk of dehydration due to age related changes; that the scale of the problem was huge, linked to countless poor health outcomes and ultimately that the best way to prevent unnecessary ‘avoidable’ dehydration is to ensure people consistently receive the correct level of support from carers to help them to drink. However, much to my surprise I discovered that there was no simple risk assessment tool to help carers identify the level and type of support needed to help a person to drink. Having then identified this significant gap in evidence based care, I decided to create ROC ‘reliance on a carer’ to drink, in order to fulfil this unmet fundamental need.
